Senior Oracle Application Database Administrator

Job Description

This position is for a Senior Oracle Application Database Administrator (App DBA), with deep technical skills, excellent communication abilities and Project execution skills. The DBA will be responsible for Project and Application DBA tasks. The DBA will spend 6 months working with the Database Engineering Projects team in order to acclimate to Northern’s database project standards/processes and database environment. After that time period, the App DBA will transfer to the Business Infrastructure Solutions & Strategy team and be assigned to support a Business Unit.


The DBA will work within and adhere to Northern’s Project Management methodology. The DBA will design, build, test and deploy quality database that are consistent with project objectives and Northern’s technology architecture standards and best practices. The DBA will be involved in requirements definition, design, development, deployment, maintenance and enhancement of applications from a database perspective. The DBA will execute database tasks from design phase to deployment phase utilizing their expertise to direct design, make configuration suggestions, and implement database solutions that maximize system availability, efficiency, effectiveness, integrity, recoverability, and supportability. During the 6 month tenure with the Database Engineering Projects team, the DBA will work on database and application projects including upgrades of Oracle RDBMS versions 9i, 10g, 11g to the latest Oracle 12c RDBMS release utilizing multi-tenant container/pluggable RDBMs on Oracle Engineered Systems (Exadata).


Essential Functions

Strategy & Planning

• Partner with business, technical, and application partners to discuss the project requirements and to help plan and develop solutions for the Oracle Database architecture.

• Develop and execute data migration strategies for VLDB, review and improve lifecycle upgrade processes, contribute to project best practices for Engineered Systems (Exadata).

• Performs the capacity planning required for new application database environments.

• Communicate and educate Application teams regarding Oracle technologies (including but not limited to RAC, the Exadata platform and the process of rolling maintenance plans for engineered systems).

• Contribute to capacity and scalability planning efforts as pertaining to the application needs.

• Ensure adherence to standards and guidelines of corporate database infrastructure strategy.

• Participates in application development processes and code reviews of database objects.

• Enhance statistics gathering process to address application specific requirements.

• Plan and complete projects based on high-level requirements with minimal or no guidance.


Deployment

• Work with the application teams to understand project requirements and guide technical solutions for enterprise deployments.

• Deliver projects in a timely manner and within budget.

• Provide accurate cost estimates and Status for their projects.

• Participate in upgrades and migration of Oracle legacy software versions (Lifecycle).

 Plan, coordinate and implement security measures to safeguard information against accidental or unauthorized damage, modification or disclosure.



Operational Management

• Participate in the design, configuration and implementation of secure and scalable enterprise databases.

• Establishes and enforces database engineering processes to tune batch jobs and application SQL queries for optimal performance.

• Design and write efficient SQL and PL/SQL code to achieve maximum performance.

• Create and Implement logical and physical database designs.

• Establish and maintain working relationship with representatives from the Technology Project Management Office, Project DBAs, and Application partners. • Work closely with Database Engineering to facilitate knowledge transfer for new RDBMS technologies.

• Troubleshoot and resolve issues affecting Oracle databases.

• Develop and document the environmental, processes, schedules, maintenance cycles, profiles, etc. for application databases.

• Provide regular, clear and consistent communication (written and oral) on the status of projects, issues, and deliverables to his or her management and to project managers.

• Setup monitoring of Database system health (ie. performance, capacity, availability).

• Mentor and coach development staff in designing and building well-performing database structures and application SQL code.

• Perform activities in support of a 24x7 global support model for all environments including providing Level 3 support during business or client impacting incidents.

• Assists with identifying root-cause, establishing measures to prevent database related incidents, and ensuring database-related problem management follow-ups are completed on time.

• Work with vendors to facilitate resolution of technical issues. Incidental Functions

• Monitor the Oracle Database to identify and recommend alternatives/enhancements that would benefit application performance.

• Maintain current knowledge of the technology workspace in terms of current state, future possibilities, forthcoming technologies, and their relevance and impact.

• Implement disaster planning/mitigation/recovery for Application Databases.

• Work outside the standard office 8 hour workday as required including supporting firecalls during working hours and off-hours.

Position Requirements

Formal Education & Certification


• Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or related field Skills & Experience

• 7+ years as Oracle Database Administrator/Engineer.

• Demonstrable knowledge in SQL queries, stored procedure programming and writing database related artifacts in Java and .Net

• 5+ years of experience with Unix/Linux System (Red Hat and Oracle Enterprise Linux).


• Knowledge of Oracle 11g, 12c, RAC, Data Guard, OEM, AWR, Unix Shell Scripting.

• Familiar with Golden Gate or Infosphere Datastage CDC.

• Strong knowledge of the Linux operating system.

 Experience with Installing/Upgrading/Patching database software.

• Deep experience with backup/recovery design, DR implementation, monitoring implementation, performance tuning and optimization.

• Experience working with ITIL processes (i.e. Change, Problem, Incident, etc.). • Experience in developing documentation, white papers and presentations to all levels of management and technical staff. Personal Attributes

• Collaborates with application developers to create enterprise-level database designs, SQL queries and stored procedures.
