Strategy and Corporate Development Specialist, Asset Management 

The Strategy and Corporate Development Specialist will be responsible for supporting strategic planning, other top-priority Northern Trust Asset Management (NTAM) initiatives, and potential strategic partnerships or M&A. He or she will identify, research, and evaluate threats and opportunities to our long-term growth plan, conducting fact-based and data-driven research to develop business cases and strategic options. Using industry insights, competitor developments, internal capabilities, and financial models, he or she will develop analytical models and executive presentations to influence our long-term growth plans and priorities. 

Partnering with business lines and functions, he or she will support business line strategic and tactical planning—collaborating with business lines, identifying cross-functional strategic initiatives, and supporting the development and alignment of functional strategies.  

The Strategy and Corporate Development Specialist will report to the Director of Asset Management Strategy, helping drive deep dive special projects in areas most relevant to the Asset Management Executive Committee's strategic agenda. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Perform complex quantitative and qualitative analysis, including mining and analyzing data, setting up financial models, and conducting market and competitive research.  
• Lead key research projects, evaluating market developments and potential competitor moves across all aspects of business (from operations to commercial execution), implications to industry and business, and recommended responses. • Continuously maintain perspective on competitors’ market position, strengths, and weaknesses, and how NTAM may be impacted by market trends and competitors’ strategy and actions. Deliver forward-looking market analysis and evaluate internal and external threats and opportunities, implications to the business, and recommended course of action.  
• Segment markets and customers as to enable a granular understanding of key markets and tactical actions on the part of the business in response to market data. 
• Conduct industry research to identify opportunities within existing lines of business, in new geographic markets, or in new product verticals, including market and competitive analyses, fit with organization, financial implications, and entry strategy.  
• Work with business line leadership to lead the development of tactics and measurable goals. 
 • Work closely with Sales, Marketing, Product, Finance, Operations, Legal, and other business and support functions to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of initiatives, supporting cross-functional business partners at all levels with analytic insights and problem solving. 
• Define and create executable business cases to support new products and other growth initiatives based on a fact-based, analytically-driven approach, working with senior team members. 
• Help create client- and executive-ready materials—agendas, memos, and presentations—with clearly articulated messages and story lines supported by market research and data analysis. 
• Build a solid understanding of the internal and external data sources available to fuel research projects and support/refute key hypotheses.  
• Support strategic partnership and M&A initiatives with data and analysis on market size, market growth, competitive differentiation, and other key due diligence needs. 
• Evaluate strategic fit of potential M&A targets, including market, customer, competitive, and synergy analyses.
• 5+ years post-undergraduate experience with 2-3 post-MBA 
• Top-tier strategy consulting, investment banking (or other transaction-advisory services firms), private equity and/or corporate strategy and corporate development 
• Advanced analytical and financial modeling skills, with ability to organize, structure and process moderate to large sets of data efficiently and effectively 
• Detail-oriented but able to see the bigger picture 
• Strategic, analytical, quick thinker with unconventional problem-solving capabilities and desire to create new analytic solutions 
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including sharing ideas and information across diverse audiences and producing high-quality deliverables in order to drive business decisions 
• Demonstrated ability to foster an interactive and collaborative environment, to influence individuals or group with diverse opinions, to enlist cooperation without direct control/authority 
• Proven ability to break down complex problems into manageable goals 
• Familiarity with M&A transaction terms 
• Confident and able to be influential and assertive with strong decision-making skills 
• Excellent time management, project planning, and organizational skills  
• High level of integrity and professional judgment, with the ability to effectively manage highly sensitive, confidential information 
• Expert knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint, preferably with practical experience with Think-cell
