Responsible for the strategic analysis of key investments for the firm and providing senior management with information to support key decisions and trade-offs.  Provide senior management with visibility into large investments and initiatives that have been approved and their expected impact on Northern’s financials over time.  Ensure appropriate linkage to short and long term projections.
Develop and enhance tools and resources that can be leveraged by BU finance teams and business units to help develop business cases.  Provide training and support as needed.
Provide financial support for certain large scale strategic initiatives, major contracts or transactions.  Responsible for PPNR processes and projections, supporting the firm’s capital stress testing.  Contributes to the development of the consolidated strategic long-range plans, working closely with the Business Unit CFOs and senior stakeholders.  

Major Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities for the team may evolve, but will be comprised largely of the following:
•Manage and develop team of analysts, senior analysts, and manager(s) supporting a broad set of financial projection and analysis activities.  Ensure team has clear priorities and manage those priorities thoughtfully as the year evolves.  Responsible for hiring, development, promotion, and performance management for the team.
•Strategic analysis of key investment alternatives, portfolio trade-offs, and ad hoc analysis to support business decisions.  Work closely within Finance to drive effective governance and oversight of IT capital investments. 
•Provide support for large scale strategic initiatives, especially those that span the enterprise.  Ensure that investments and associated benefits are properly identified, quantified, and monitored in an appropriate manner.  Provide support for M&A activity, working with relevant BU CFO(s), as needed.
•Work with MRP&A and the BU CFOs, ensure clear accountability for investments.
•Provide senior management with reporting and analysis that highlights the cumulative expected impact of investments and initiatives on Northern’s financials and key metrics over time. 
•Ensure short and long term financial impacts of key investments are understood and properly reflected in the firm’s financial projections.  Provide perspective on how to balance investments over time in a manner that ensures that the businesses’ needs are met, while also thoughtfully maximizing shareholder return over time.
•Ensure that resources are developed and maintained that help BU finance teams and business partners develop sound business cases and financials to support key decisions.
•For Software, IT Hardware and IT Equipment  and Real Estate capital projects:

  • Provide guidance regarding “minimum required” analysis for investments (e.g., 10 year cash flow ).  Ensure tools are developed and consistently leveraged.  Provide training to key finance and business partners regarding financial analysis of projects and investments.

  • Provide / weigh in on key financial assumptions that need to be consistently reflected in analysis across investments (e.g., cost of capital, interest rate projections). 

  • Provide guidance regarding approach to analyzing various types of investments (e.g., App Growth & Lifecycle vs. BU investments).

  • Review all Capital Approval Requests > $2 million.  Ensure financial implications are well understood and appropriately contemplated in go forward forecasts and projections.

  • Working with Finance personnel to  develop annual capital “budget” and expected financial implications. 

  • Help to develop a strategic view regarding investment affordability, mix, and required return over time.  Thoughtfully incorporate into short and longer term financial outlook. 

  • Participate in the formal review and prioritization of investments, ensuring clarity of investments, deliverables, and benefits over time.  Understand how investments and return expectations change over the course of projects and ensure proper governance and control of changes.  Partner with Execution Authority to optimize the governance approach over time.

•Assist with / conduct analysis of key location strategy and real estate decisions.  Ensure financial implications are properly framed up and understood by senior management.  Provide analysis of alternatives and recommendations regarding structuring of deals and timing of investments.
•Own PPNR multi-year projections and associated documentation for the annual stress testing.  Work closely with model development, Model Validation, and Capital Adequacy.  Actively participate in reviews and governance as appropriate.
•Actively participate in annual strategic planning process.  May include being responsible for the consolidated  financial projections and associated analysis, working closely with the CFO, BUs and Corporate Strategy.

Knowledge/Skills:
Possesses leadership and organizational skills required to balance multiple priorities and effectively interact with a broad set of constituents.  Excellent analytical and problem solving skills required to evaluate financial impact of investment alternatives and long-term projections.  Ability to effectively train and coach team members and effective written and verbal communication skills are necessary to present relevant information to senior management.  Strong influence management and negotiation skills are critical.  Strong knowledge of financial analysis (including discounted cash flow analyses, P&L versus cash views, etc.) and reporting acquired through prior experience.  MBA with concentration in finance is strongly preferred.

 

 

Experience:
Minimum 15 years of related experience with emphasis on financial analysis, strategy, and management reporting, planning, and analysis. Experience working with and presenting to all levels of an organization is critical. Significant prior experience managing and leading teams is also critical.
