 Job Summary:
As part of Northern Trust’s Foundation and Institutional Advisors (FIA) practice, the FIA senior portfolio manager’s role is to be both investment program manager and lead relationship manager for institutional entities where Northern Trust serves as investment advisor. Key responsibilities include guiding client investment committees in the development of long term investment strategy, implementation of strategy, and ongoing monitoring of client portfolios. The successful senior portfolio manager will play a leading role in growing Northern Trust’s FIA practice.
The FIA Investment Advisor serves a key role in the group’s primary mission to proactively advise, design, execute and oversee client’s investment and/or asset servicing needs. The individual will act as a thought leader in the foundation and endowment community attending conferences, speaking on panels and creating visibility for the Northern Trust FIA practice. To ensure the FIA senior portfolio manager can remain focused on the capital markets and their client’s portfolios, the team includes separate asset servicing and administration professionals to service non-investment related needs.
The FIA practice’s client base includes a mix of foundations, endowments, healthcare firms, associations, and ERISA entities. The client base includes community, public and private philanthropic, as well as private businesses enterprises. As a result, the FIA practice is intertwined with Northern Trust’s larger high net worth business practices.
 Major Duties:
1) Manages investment portfolios for institutional clients to achieve client objectives.
2) Assists the client in evaluating and developing long term investment strategy as appropriate given risk tolerances and preferences, funding and liquidity needs.
3) Lead meetings with clients (CFOs, Boards or other oversight committees) to assess portfolio performance, strategy and outlook. Respond to client inquiries and requests.
4) Analyzes and implements overall portfolio structure utilizing knowledge of economic and financial market conditions in conjunction with the clients' objectives.
5) Ensure overall client satisfaction by facilitating efforts of service team, coordinating resources to ensure timely delivery and issue-resolution, and effectively communicating client needs/concerns to other Northern Trust partners.
6) Cultivate strong working relationships with client contacts. Demonstrate the ability to add value by anticipating possible solutions and partnering with client to implement same.
7) Broaden the scope of client relationships in order to enhance company revenues and profitability either directly or through referrals to others.
8) Play an active role in business development efforts by working closely with practice leadership, business development officers and other partners as appropriate.
9) Actively participate in sales and marketing presentations. Analyze and assist in preparation of sales materials for new business presentations.
10) Work closely with internal partners (manager and equity investment research, fixed income, trading, performance analysis) to make investment decisions and respond to client needs and requests.
11) Maintain a current awareness of new investment strategies and instruments through regular contact with the investment research area and other industry professionals, as well as through personal professional development.
12) Act as a thought leader in the foundation and endowment community attending conferences, speaking on panels, and creating visibility for the Northern Trust FIA practice.
 


 Qualifications:
Candidates should have 10+ years or more of progressive investment experience including client facing responsibilities. Familiarity with investment concepts, asset allocation, and the use of a variety of proprietary and external tools is strongly preferred as is CFA or CIMA and MBA . Mastery of consultative approach to client service a must. Existing foundation, endowment or pension marketplace experience is preferred. A demonstrated track record of success in business development is desired.
