Database Engineering Manager – Oracle

Northern Trust is seeking an outcome oriented, self-directed individual to lead a team of infrastructure database engineers, responsible for the architecture, development, resiliency, and stability of Oracle databases and Exadata systems. You will collaborate with many architects and distributed engineering and operations teams to plan and execute projects focused on optimizing and improving database infrastructure.  

 

The Database Engineering manager- Oracle will take a hands-on approach to lead the Oracle database engineering team in the planning, design, testing, implementation, control, tuning, monitoring, and maintenance of existing and future Oracle database technologies across multiple platforms.  This person will also assist with escalation/resolution of issues, overseeing engineering projects, and driving database strategy and roadmaps.  

 

Responsibilities

  • Lead and empower a team of database engineers to provide Oracle database solutions for Northern Trust distributed systems
  • Manage team workload and resource assignments
  • Mentor, enable growth and development of individual members, and of team identity and performance
  • Ensure compliance with Control Standards for all aspects of database engineering
  • Develop and contribute to multi-year database architecture roadmaps that align with IT enterprise architecture
  • Oversee the evaluation of new database technologies and provide recommendations for adoption to improve efficiency
  • Proactively identify, design, and implement initiatives for improved scalability, reliability and security
  • Develop and implement an automation strategy for provisioning and monitoring databases in addition to automating Disaster Recovery failovers
  • Manage the development and maintenance of standards, best practices, and operational procedures for distributed database technologies.
  • Identify training requirements for direct reports, develop appropriate training plans, and coordinate personnel development
  • Lead technical discussions and manage multiple internal database projects
  • Participate in budget planning process and manage budget forecasts
  • Collaborate with development, architecture, and operations teams to provide architectural design recommendations
  • Provide technical direction for the team that designs and develops highly resilient distributed database solutions.
  • Act as escalation point of contact for issue resolutions
  • Conduct regular team meetings to ensure deliverables and timelines are met.
  • Provide project updates to senior management.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one’s with direct reports.
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, performance feedback, and career guidance to direct reports.
  • Provide labor estimates for internal and external database projects
  • Set annual expectations for direct reports and conduct mid-year and annual performance reviews
  • Work closely with Infrastructure PMO Project Managers
  • Conduct and oversee production readiness review sessions for new databases going live.
  • Ensure Northern Trust license compliance for database products
  • Ensure adherence to ITSM’s Change, Incident and Problem Management processes
  • Provide rotational on-call manager escalation support for production incidents and swat calls during business hours and off-hours
  • Oversee knowledge transfer and support turnover transition to Operations teams for new engineering efforts
  • Manage and oversee buildout of database infrastructure to support projects for new applications and upgrades.
  • Partner with business, technical, and vendor contacts to determine requirements and to help develop solution design/system architecture.
  • Drive capacity and scalability planning efforts.
  • Participate in server hardware/software lifecycle management.
  • Establish and maintain working relationship with representatives from the customer/vendor.
  • Evaluate new technologies and conduct product proof of concepts.
  • Participate in Disaster Recovery testing

 

Required:

  • 5+ years managerial experience
  • 8+ years experience in Oracle
    • In-depth knowledge of administering Oracle databases
    • Deep knowledge of Oracle RAC and Oracle Data Guard
    • Experience with Oracle Multitenancy (Containers and Pluggable databases)
    • Experience with Oracle 11g, 12c and 19c
    • Experience with Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM)
    • Experience with Exadata Engineered Systems
    • Experience with DBaaS
    • Experience in large-scale database design

 

 

  • Experience in developing Automation Strategies for provisioning and monitoring databases - on Exadata and Private Cloud (non-Exadata) with focus on built-in Control Standards to reduce/remove technology risks and safeguard the environment
  • Experience in developing Automation Strategies for Disaster Recovery
  • Strong knowledge of the Linux operating system
  • Ability to think and act strategically and evaluate options in the short, medium and long term.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills and the ability to foster building relationships with a diverse group of application, infrastructure and management leaders
  • Strong planning and organizing skills including the ability to manage several work streams simultaneously.  
  • Clear decision-making ability with the facility to judge complex situations and assess when to escalate issues.
  • Experience developing standards, architecting, engineering and operationalizing new database or database-related technologies.
  • Experience working in a highly collaborative environment and promoting a teamwork mentality
  • Experience working with various vendors, building partnerships, and establishing communication plans, and roadmap sessions.
  • Energetic and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and under pressure.
  • Ability to cope in a technically complex, fast-changing, and deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to listen and make decisions after considering diverse opinions and perspectives from team members
  • Clear focus on Production stability and resiliency
  • Experience working in a 24x7 support environment
  • Experience with process improvement and operational efficiency projects - both leading and supporting
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and coaching skills
  • Ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Experience in developing documentation, white papers and presentations for all levels of management and technical staff
  • A College or University degree in computer science or related field and/or relevant proven work experience is preferred

  • Exposure to Delphix database virtualization technology
  • Exposure to IBM Infosphere Change Data Capture
  • Exposure or experience with Golden Gate replication
  • Exposure to Exadata Cloud@Customer
  • Exposure to ServiceNow (ITSM)
  • Exposure to Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)
  • Exposure to provisioning and managing instances in private and/or public cloud (ie. AWS, Azure)
