The Northern Trust Company is seeking an Indirect Tax Specialist for its Tempe Operating Center. Northern is planning to establish a “center for indirect tax excellence” with this candidate ultimately functioning as its team leader.
The candidate should have technical state sales and use tax experiences in the financial services industry. The ideal candidate would have experience with Illinois sales and use tax and City of Chicago transaction tax matters with respect to the taxability of market data and software licenses.
The candidate should also have knowledge with respect to the reporting of vendor payments to the Internal Revenue Service, reporting of payments to non-US resident vendors, and related US withholding tax requirements.
This position will report to the Director of Corporate Taxes and locally to the Global Accounts Payable Manager.


Specific Job Responsibilities


• Responsible for overseeing the indirect tax matters and issues associated with the daily vendor payment activities of the US Accounts Payable Team. 

• Oversee the accurate & timely filing of IRS Forms 1099-MISCs & 1042s as well as the related preparatory and related data gathering activities as required throughout the year.

• Oversee the timely and accurate completion of sales and use tax returns (42 returns) for applicable states.

• Understanding the processes for the procurement and the delivery of hardware, software, and market data services so that the taxability of these expenditures can be determined for indirect tax purposes. This would include a review of the underlying vendor contracts, software licenses, etc. and/or contacting the vendors.

• Function as the coordinator for any sales and use tax audits. This will include reviewing and formulating a plan to respond to auditors’ requests and providing timely updates to management on the status of audits.

• Coordinates meetings and gathers documentation for internal and external audits.  Serves as the project lead for all North America- based audits.

• Serves as an expert technical indirect tax resource or “go to person” within the group to support the Procurement Group and other groups in the Bank with respect to their sales, use, or any other indirect tax matters.

• Work with the Global Accounts Payable Manager and other AP Team Leads to identify and implement process efficiencies.

• Documents, maintains, enforces and constantly improves AP SOX control points, procedures and standard policies.

• Gathers and reports on the department’s processing metrics. Provides ideas to promote automation and to improve workflow processes.

Desired Skills


• A minimum of 5 years AP indirect tax experience in a lead role, preferably within a global organization, possessing strong leadership and organizational skills.

• Solid experience and detailed knowledge of IRS Form 1042 reporting/filing for payments to foreign vendors  and Form 1099-MISC reporting/filing for payments to US vendors.

• Experience with state and local indirect tax matters such as sales & use taxes.

• Technical tax knowledge of state sales, use, or transaction tax matters (“indirect taxes”) associated hardware and software expenditures and expenditures for market data services and the delivery of the underlying products to the purchaser. Knowledge of Illinois sales and use taxes and the City of Chicago transaction tax is a strong plus.

• Analytical skills that will facilitate effective reviews of vendor contracts for hardware and market data services, software licenses, etc.

• Solid accounting and analytical skills gained either through qualification or experience

• Good organizational skills, detailed oriented and ability to prioritize

• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, since it is expected that the selected candidate for this position will act as a key contact for various internal and external partners, including business unit partners, internal auditors, external vendors, and state and municipal tax auditors.

• Communication skills to effectively communicate and discuss technical issues with the Procurement Group, the Enterprise Enablement Group, vendors, etc.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word and Visio

• Experience with enterprise systems a plus
