SUMMARY


The Associate Accountant - Fees is responsible for performing a variety of accounting, and analytical duties in support of the Accounting Operations team within the Finance department. Works to understand and optimize processes in conformity to rigorous standards for accuracy and timeliness required by Northern Trust and other external bodies.  Must demonstrate the ability to research, resolve and communicate issues proactively.


MAJOR DUTIES


• Responsible for ensuring the accounting for our core revenue stream ( Trust, Investment and Other Servicing Fees) is accurate for both legal entity reporting and management reporting
• Actively participate in the month end Close cycle to ensure Trust, Investment and accounting for other Servicing Fees are recorded accurately and timely in a standardized, controlled environment for both legal and management books 
• Responsible for recording and reviewing Trust, Investment and Other Servicing Fee accruals to recognize revenue that has been earned, but not billed. 
• Responsible for allocating Fee revenue to Business Unit segments (recording and reviewing)
• Perform Balance Sheet account reconciliations and resolve exceptions/differences in conformity with Corporate Policy
• Perform various analytical duties to explain and communicate concisely the fluctuations in Trust, Investment and Other Servicing Fees
• Research and resolve complex accounting transactions and reporting issues, where some expertise is required to interpret policies, guidelines and/or processes.
• Work in collaboration with our business partners to ensure accurate and timely deliverables and solving of revenue booking related issues
• Maintain an effective working relationship with both our external and internal audit teams
• Demonstrate a clear understanding and adherence to all controls and audit points related to Fee accounting
• Champion strategic initiatives to enhance performance and productivity
• Serve as a key liaison between Fee Billing, SOX, internal and external auditors, and other operational areas to provide analytical and procedural expertise
• Provide support for internal and external requests  
• Communicate and escalate issues to Fee Management/Leadership Team as required
• Maintain policies and procedures and utilize best practices

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

• Bachelors in Accounting required, Public Accounting and/or CPA preferred
• 1 or more years of corporate accounting/general ledger experience
• Ability to apply Intermediate knowledge of accounting principles and related concepts, including revenue recognition, accounts receivable and variance analysis
• Strong analytical abilities
• Excellent time management, organizational and problem solving skills with attention to detail
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills that demonstrate the ability to adapt to various audiences/constituencies
• Self-motivated, self-starter, ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic and demanding environment with a flexible approach towards changing work methods, deadlines and variable workloads
• Ability to take initiative to continually improve efficiency and processes; work independently and as a team member
• Ability to work under pressure and to deliver to tight deadlines; multi-task and prioritize work
• Ability to adapt and react positively in a changing and dynamic environment
• Takes initiative in completing tasks accurately and timely
• Advanced Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft applications skills, experience with PeopleSoft a plus
